President Biden Calls for Filibuster Reform During CNN Town Hall

President Biden: "We're gonna have to move to the point where we fundamentally alter the filibuster."

WASHINGTON, D.C. — This evening, a day after Senate Republicans filibustered the Freedom to Vote Act, President Biden made his strongest comments to date in support of altering the filibuster to pass voting rights, raise the debt limit and “maybe more.” His comments follow growing calls from organizers, advocacy groups and voters nationwide to eliminate the filibuster to secure democracy and expand access to the ballot box.

Just Democracy Spokesperson Stephany Spaulding responded with the following:

“Speaking directly to the American people, President Biden made clear the current iteration of the filibuster is abused, overused, and must be reformed. We’re thrilled to hear him call for changes to a Senate rule that Republicans have weaponized to obstruct and block progress for Black and Brown people.

We hope the President will continue to use the full power of his office and platform to call for structural democracy reform. The President’s legacy and agenda hinge on Congress removing the filibuster as a blockade.”
