WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Sen. Krysten Sinema and Sen. Joe Manchin were no-shows at a lunch between Texas state lawmakers and Senate Democrats to discuss the aggressive voter suppression regime playing out in Texas, as well as growing urgency to pass the For the People Act. For Sen. Sinema, her decision to not attend the lunch comes only a few weeks after her appearance with Rep. John Cornyn in Texas, where she made false comments calling the filibuster a tool to “protect the democracy of our nation.” Right before that, Sen. Sinema failed to vote for a now filibustered commission to investigate the Jan. 6 insurrection. 

 

Rev. Dr. Stephany Spaulding, Founder of Truth and Conciliation and Coalition Member of Just Democracy issued the following statement:

“Sen. Sinema and Sen. Manchin can’t claim to be staunch advocates for voting rights while consistently refusing to demonstrate those values. Sen. Sinema’s recent series of anti-democratic positions are particularly offensive to the Black and Brown voters who delivered her seat and sent her to Washington to fight for equal voting rights and a more representative democracy. Sens. Sinema and Manchin have a choice to make next week when the For the People Act comes up for a vote: Will they side with segregationists like Sen. John Cornyn, or with voting rights heroes like the late Rep. John Lewis?”
