With the Biden-Harris Victory, America Must Value Black and Brown Voices and Votes

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Black and Brown voters have cast the decisive votes to elect Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Kamala Harris to be the next President and Vice President of the United States. Senator Harris will become the first woman, Black person and South Asian woman to become the Vice President. While the fate of the Senate is unclear, the decisive Biden-Harris victory means the fight for a fairer and more equal democracy is just beginning.

In response to Vice President Biden’s victory, Tammy Boyd, Chief Policy Officer and Counsel of the Black Women’s Health Imperative, founded in Georgia, issued the following statement on behalf of the Just Democracy coalition:

“After four years of corruption and racism, the American people chose a new path, led by organizers who work in communities that have too often been ignored. Vice President Biden and Senator Harris’ victory is a mandate to deliver where Trump has fallen short for Black and Brown people – delivering a serious COVID response, police reform, climate change, voting rights, gun safety and much more.

“Thanks to Black and Brown organizers in Atlanta, Arizona, Philadelphia, Detroit and across the country, Biden and Harris won by more than 4 million votes, receiving more votes than any presidential candidate in history. Yet because of the Electoral College – an inherently racist institution – the decision hinged on several thousand votes in just a few swing states.

“This exemplifies the need for structural democracy reforms. When a 4 million-vote advantage leads to a close victory, our democracy is broken. We must fight to ensure that our voices and votes matter equally.

“In the new administration, we will hold elected officials accountable for delivering that change. Our communities can no longer be ignored, and our voices must be valued.”
