The ‘For the People Act’ Can Revive Our Democracy — Only if We Eliminate the Filibuster
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Senate introduced the For the People Act (S.1), the most significant piece of democracy reform legislation in decades. S.1 would limit the influence of money in politics, curb gerrymandering, and protect the right to vote in Black and Brown communities around the country. Despite broad bipartisan support, the bill will not pass if the Senate filibuster remains intact.
Reverend and Professor Stephany Spaulding, Founder of Truth and Conciliation and Coalition Member of Just Democracy issued the following statement in response:
“The right to vote is under attack as Republicans file hundreds of voter suppression laws across the nation to silence Black and Brown voices. The For the People Act is the only way to protect our most sacred freedom, and the only way to pass this legislation is to eliminate the filibuster. Senate Democrats have stated that democracy reform is their number one priority — to make it a reality, they have to eliminate the filibuster.
If the 117th Congress eliminates the filibuster and passes S.1, it will forever be remembered as a body that protected Black and Brown communities and erased a vestige of our white supremacist history. Without eliminating this Jim Crow relic, America will slide back into the era of literacy tests and poll taxes.”
