President Biden and Vice President Harris Affirm Need to Do ‘Everything We Can to Protect the Sacred Right to Vote’
Democrats Must Pass the For the People Act and Abolish the Jim Crow Filibuster
Washington, D.C. — Today, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris scheduled two events pushing forward the vital fight against voter suppression. President Biden will meet with major civil rights groups this afternoon and Vice President Harris announced the expansion of the DNC's "I Will Vote" campaign earlier today. These actions put the full weight of the administration behind the imperative to protect voting rights for all Americans.
“We have urgent work before us — and we are committed to doing everything we can to protect the sacred right to vote and pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.” said President Biden on Twitter.
“We are going to assemble the largest voter protection team we have ever had to ensure that all Americans can vote,” said Vice President Harris at the event. “This isn’t about Democrats or Republicans — it’s about Americans. Our democracy is stronger when everyone participates, and our democracy is weaker when people are left out. This is the fight of our lifetime.”
Rev. Dr. Stephany Spaulding, Just Democracy Spokesperson and Founder for Truth and Conciliation, issued the following statement:
“Senate Democrats must follow the President and Vice President’s lead and put the For the People Act back on the Senate floor to secure voting rights for all Americans. The only way to successfully pass vital voting rights measures is by abolishing the Jim Crow filibuster once and for all. The filibuster is the only thing standing between the president’s goal of pushing forward equal civil rights for Black and Brown Americans and protecting our democracy against Republicans’ voter suppression efforts.”
Just Democracy is one of many advocacy groups pushing Democratic Senators to secure voting rights for millions of Americans. On June 21, Just Democracy and twenty Arizona groups launched a local ad campaign calling on Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) to eliminate the filibuster to pass the For the People Act.
