Just Democracy Coalition Urges the Senate to Eliminate the Filibuster and Fast Track H.R. 1
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, in response to the House passing H.R.1, the For the People Act of 2021, Just Democracy coalition member Marcus Bass of North Carolina Black Alliance issued the following statement:
“The For the People Act is an integral part of a 21st century civil rights agenda. The bill would strengthen voting rights and fair representation for Americans, while bolstering ethics and transparency laws — it is a significant step toward delivering on the promises made to the very Black and Brown voters who won Democrats their seats in the last election. But until we eliminate the Senate filibuster, we won’t see the promise of H.R.1 or any other democracy reform legislation. We can’t let a Jim Crow relic stop us from realizing a more equitable, fair and inclusive democracy.”
The For the People Act would limit the influence of big money in politics by empowering small donors; make voting easier and more secure; address gerrymandering; and give the public more information about who is lobbying the federal government. Recent polling from Data for Progress found that 67% of Americans support the For the People Act, including 56 percent of Republicans and 68 percent of Independents. In a January poll from Navigator Research, bipartisan majorities supported ending gerrymandering, and polls consistently find that broad swaths of voters support sweeping campaign finance reforms.
