Democracy for America Joins Just Democracy Coalition
Democracy For America Will Join A Growing Coalition Demanding Key Structural Democracy Reforms In Fight for Inclusive Democracy
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Just Democracy announced the addition of Democracy for America to its coalition of over 30 grassroots racial and social justice organizations mobilizing for structural changes to American democracy. Despite Biden and Harris winning the popular vote with a historic number of votes, the race hinged on a few thousand votes in several swing states because of the Electoral College – an inherently racist institution.
Democracy for America has consistently been on the front lines of our nation’s most prominent political and ideological battles — fighting for inclusive populism at all levels of office in all 50 states. The addition of Democracy for America supports a growing coalition that is demanding structural changes to our democracy. Democracy for America will work alongside groups like the National Black Justice Coalition, Soul to Soul Sisters, Purpose Over Pain, among many other groups, to fight for a more representative democracy.
“Black and Brown voters played a decisive role in saving our democracy in the 2020 election and delivering an unambiguous win for Vice President Biden and Senator Kamala Harris,” said Democracy for America CEO Yvette Simpson. “When all the votes are counted, Vice President Biden and Senator Harris will win the popular vote by more than 4 million votes, the most of any presidential ticket in history. We are incredibly excited to join a coalition that will demand reforms that are necessary to empower the New American Majority — people of color and white progressives. We will put pressure on politicians and the media to put our country’s income inequality crisis at the center of the political debate, hear grassroots activists’ calls for populist progressive reforms, and robustly respond to injustice, however it emerges.”
The Just Democracy coalition will continue to spread the word about our efforts to pursue structural democracy reforms.
