Black and Brown Organizers Speak Out After Failed Senate Voting Rights Vote
WASHINGTON, DC- Tonight, Senator Sinema, Senator Manchin, and 50 Senate Republicans failed to support a talking filibuster to advance the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act.
Dr. Warren H. Stewart, Sr. Chairperson African American Christian Clergy Coalition, said this in response:
"There is nothing admirable about standing up for an outdated Senate rule to the determinant of equitable voting rights for all. Senator Sinema swore to serve her constituents and has failed once again. However, we want to thank Senator Kelly for his vocal stance to ensure the filibuster won’t block voting rights.
This failed vote comes as Arizona and other states continue to introduce and pass oppressive voting laws. We don't have the luxury to stop fighting with our rights continuously under attack. Voting rights are the heart and soul of U.S. democracy, and we will do everything in our power to ensure that they are secure and expanded.”
