Biden’s Approach to Protecting Voting Rights is “Far Too Passive”
Just Democracy: “As Black and Brown organizers continue fighting for our basic right to vote, we cannot rely on Republicans who the president thinks ‘know better than this’ — we haven’t seen any.”
Washington, D.C. — Last night at a CNN Town Hall in Cincinnati, President Biden made several concerning statements about preserving the filibuster, even in the quest to protect voting rights. This comes shortly after Senate Republicans weaponized the filibuster to block debate on the For the People Act.
Rev. Dr. Stephany Spaulding, Coalition Member of Just Democracy and Founder of Truth & Conciliation issued the following statement in response:
“Last night, President Biden acknowledged the Jim Crow filibuster is being badly abused and that reform is needed — while this is a step forward, his approach remains far too passive to achieve the voting rights reform we desperately need. As Black and Brown organizers continue fighting for our basic right to vote, we cannot rely on Republicans who the President thinks ‘know better than this’ — because we haven’t seen any. Republicans are busy passing voter suppression laws around the country, and they’ve already shown they’re not even open to having a debate on voting rights legislation.
Black and Brown voters showed up to elect President Biden and the Democratic trifecta, and now it’s time for Congress to do their jobs — eliminate the filibuster and pass the For the People Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, and the Washington, D.C. Admissions Act."
