Sen. Jacky Rosen Voices Support for Eliminating the Filibuster, Joining Majority of Democratic Senators & American Public on the Right Side of History
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Washington Post reported in a new profile of Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV) that the senator supports abolishing the filibuster in order to protect American democracy and equal voting rights for all.
In response to the announcement, Just Democracy spokesperson and Founder of Truth & Conciliation Rev. Dr. Stephany Spaulding commented:
“Sen. Rosen has chosen the right side of history on this issue—the side that is fighting to protect our democracy and ensure equal voting rights for Black and Brown Americans. She is a champion of reaching across the aisle, which makes her refusal to allow obstructionists to roll back voting rights and continue attacking our democracy all the more courageous and critical. Sen. Rosen is a model for her colleagues.
With hundreds of anti-voting bills being proposed by Republican-controlled state legislatures, Sen. Rosen’s colleagues must urgently rebuke futile pursuit of bipartisanship on racial justice issues—the likes of which have seldom in American history achieved bipartisan support. As the senators in support of abolishing this Jim Crow relic grow in number, all eyes are on those who have yet to summon their courage and join the right side of history.”
Key excerpts:
-
- “Shortly after the story was published, Rosen told the Post she would support eliminating the filibuster "in the case of protecting democracy,” after previously saying she supported reforming the filibuster.”
-
- “I will never stop trying to find common ground across the aisle in order to deliver for hard working Nevadans and Americans, but I’m also not going to let obstructionists stand in the way of protecting our fundamental rights as Americans," Rosen said in a statement. "Right now, our democracy is under attack and we must do everything we can to protect voting rights. If eliminating the filibuster is what it takes to get it done, then we must protect our democracy at all costs.”
-
- “In extended interviews with The Washington Post, Rosen made clear she ardently supports both the For the People Act and another voting rights bill named for the late Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.).
