Just Democracy Responds to Senator Manchin’s Op-ed in The Charleston Gazette-Mail
Manchin’s failure to act “resurrects the legacy of segregationists and gives aid and comfort to the supporters of the Big Lie.”
Washington —This morning, Senator Joe Manchin published an op-ed in The Charleston Gazette-Mail confirming he does not plan to vote for the For the People Act. The op-ed failed to raise a single substantive argument against the actual policies laid out in the For the People Act.
Dr. Rev. Stephany Spaulding, Just Democracy Spokesperson and Founder of Truth and Conciliation, issued the following statement in response:
“Senator Manchin says he’s supporting bi-partisanship by voting against the For the People Act, but what he’s doing resurrects the legacy of segregationists and gives aid and comfort to supporters of the Big Lie. Manchin’s rationale places a Jim Crow relic over the most fundamental right we have as Americans: the right to vote. Republican efforts to obstruct the right to vote are sweeping the states like wildfire and they have a clear objective to disenfranchise Black and Brown voters. Senator Manchin has a choice to do something or to do nothing.”
