Historic Voting Rights Bill Will Move One Step Closer to Mending a Broken Democratic System

Just Democracy Urges Majority Leader Schumer to Prioritize Voting Rights for Black and Brown Americans by Eliminating the Filibuster and Passing S.1

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Senate Rules and Administration Committee will hold a markup of the For the People Act, S.1, and is expected to pass the bill out of committee for a full vote on the Senate floor. The sweeping legislation would expand access to voting, end partisan gerrymandering, and combat big money in our politics.

Rev. Dr. Stephany Spaulding, Coalition Member of Just Democracy issued the following statement:

“Black and Brown communities across the country are facing grave attacks on their right to vote — this is certainly not the first time we are battling voter suppression, but it must be the last. While Republicans have made it their mission to criminalize water bottles in voting lines, Democrats are confronting racism in our democratic institutions. The For the People Act is a once in a generation opportunity to protect the right to vote, and Leader Schumer is right: failure is not an option. Today’s vote will be an essential step in the right direction toward a freer, more just America, but Congress must eliminate the filibuster to secure our vote and protect democracy.”
